All who knew Stevie share a special bond. The kind that stays, even when they've gone. From the instant Steve would rise to play, he held our full attention. His ear for the words, rhythms and sounds of America's heartland was one of his special gifts. It made us want to know more about the song and the man. In sickness he radiated an inner strength and faith in human kind that made me wish I'd known him sooner and longer. But there's still more to discover about him, and pass on; his songs, poems, writings and recordings for starters. I'll miss him but remember him in song and amongst his family and friends.

The Musician
For dear Steve, with no apologies to Tennyson (The Eagle)
He sweeps the strings with long lean hands
Sings songs from near and far-off lands
And in a ring of notes he stands
That patchwork land around him lays
He listens in musicians’ ways
And like a thunderclap he plays
Fine friend and fellow music-maker – singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, up for a song right to the end. We’ll all miss you.

Loved playing with Steve in the church band. No fuss, no ego, kind and helpful suggestions for making good music to praise God.
